Why didn't I get a good reference from former employer?

Because the only thing an employer can legally say is that you worked there, and that you were rehireable. They can't tell a prospective employer who calls that you were a bad employee. And from what you wrote, I don't see where there would be a chance they would give you a good recommendation. Pretty easy to understand, really.
